The Art of Muscadine Winemaking
Sweet History
The Muscadine grape — Vitis rotundifolia — is a true American treasure. Thriving across the Southeast for centuries, the uniquely sweet flavor profile, often described as sassy, floral, and fruity, comes directly from this native terroir. At Duplin, we blend family tradition with modern techniques, committing daily to craft the finest muscadine wines. Taste the rich, Southern history in every bottle we pour.
Time-Honored Craft
The Muscadine grape is a Southern original that launched America’s wine industry. At Duplin, we treat it with the respect its ancestry demands. In 1976, we tapped the oldest wine recipe in the United States, using North Carolina’s own native muscadine variety, scuppernong wine, to craft our first vintage. Since then, history and innovation have guided our expert winemakers. We still produce that original Scuppernong as well as up to 40 different labels, sourcing grapes grown on family farms and in our estate vineyards.
The journey from vine to glass begins immediately after harvest. We quickly press grapes to extract the pure, natural juice. This fresh juice then enters a precise, cold-fermentation process. Unlike other winemaking styles, this cooler temperature helps us carefully retain the Muscadine's unique characteristics. The method locks in the distinctive aromas and sweet flavor profile — with notes of honey, citrus, berry, raisin, and floral that vary by vintage. Commitment to these traditional, quality-driven steps is why our wines have earned numerous awards across America and Europe, making Duplin the celebrated standard for muscadine wine.
The Muscadine Advantage
Muscadine grapes are natural powerhouses. Studies show this native fruit contains some of the highest levels of antioxidants and unique compounds like ellagic acid of any fruit, especially in its thick skin and seeds. The presence of resveratrol, highly sought after for its wellness benefits, further elevates the Muscadine to a jewel of goodness.
The Duplin Experience
Muscadine wines' exceptional aromas and flavors are best enjoyed young and well-chilled. Whether you choose red, white, or rosé, a boldly sweet sipper for porch sitting or perfectly light, crisp varietal for elegant moments, Duplin's award-winning wines are the ideal partner for great food, good company, and making cherished memories. It’s not just a wine — it’s a Carolina classic.
