grapes1.gifHere at Duplin Winery, we know that all great wine must start with great grapes. David Fussell, founder of Duplin Winery, has a favorite saying around the vineyard; "Tending vines with love, yields a bountiful harvest. Its God's greatest fertilizer!" That is a motto we take to heart at Duplin Winery. We take great care to cultivate Mother Nature's greatest varietals, so each bottle of Duplin Wine brings you joy and fulfillment.

Scuppernong: The most famous of our varietals, is steep in tradition and mystery. Native to the east coast of the United States, its vines furious along the shores of Roanoke Island during the days of the Lost Colony. Sir Walter Raleigh's explorers wrote that the coast was'…so full of grapes as the very beating and surge of the sea overflowed them…in all the world, the like abundance is not to be found." The Algonquin Indians of that area called it "Ascopa" meaning sweet berry tree. The Mother Vine, the oldest living vine known, still provides its sweet prize today on that very island. Scuppernong has the unique quality of having a gender. Some vines are male, and some female. Male vines provide the pollen only. The male vines do not produce grapes. Female vines produce flowers that catch the wind driven pollen to produce the most beautiful and succulent grapes in the world.

Carlos: A highly sought after grape for winemaking, this variety is commonly grown by commercial vineyards.
Winemakers love the rich flavor of this grape. When vintners are looking to spice up their wine recipes,
no other grape entices more than Carlos. Here at Duplin Winery, we prefer to provide you with the true
Carlos experience. Dry in nature, its one of the best dry white Muscadine wines we produce.

Magnolia: Just the name of this variety steals ones heart drifting down a meandering southern river lined with lush Spanish Oaks upon its banks. This romantic grape produces wines of such flavor, that some have called it "the nectar of life." This cultivar is used to make some of our most popular estate wines to date.

Noble: The name says it all. Royal color and full bodied. Producing the bold color and rich flavor of Duplin's dry and medium reds. Nothing can compare to this varieties esteem stature in the wines it gives forth. Whether at a formal dinner or a summer sunset, this grape is…well, Noble.

James: Heaven only knows if the soul knew what he had in 1866 when he discovered this variety.
But James, Thank You! This sweet red grape produces one of our favorite wines, Hatteras Red. It adds brilliance to our wonderful blushes. James was the disciple that Jesus loved. I guess that's why its wine is loved so.

Catawba: A labrusca variety older than Concord. Catawba was born in the piedmont region of the Carolinas along the famed Catawba River. A sweet bunch grape species that produces light flowery sweet reds. We have heard that it is preferred among our bald headed patrons.

Whether you just picked a fresh native grape right from the vine; or enjoyed it in its better state, "Duplin Wine", you can't resist the greatest tasting grapes in the world.
